Sustainability is defined in our General Plan as "The ability for the City and residents of Claremont to meet the needs of the present economy, society and environment, while preserving the ability of future generations to meet their needs."

Sustainable Claremont is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization which has been formed to provide educational resources, to engage in advocacy, and to take actions which move us towards sustainability, not only within Claremont but beyond our borders. We are independent of the City but working in cooperation with it and with other organizations. If you would like to take an active part in Sustainable Claremont, click on the "volunteer" button to see a list of some ways in which you can help.

We invite all individuals and organizations to join us in these efforts!

Vote "Yes" on Measure W!

Sustainable Claremont, among many other organizations and individuals, supports passage of Measure W, the city measure to fund the purchase of our water system from Golden State Water Company. The answers to many questions about the issue can be found at

CoolCalifornia City Challenge

There's another $50,000 yet to be won -- and there's still time to help us win it! The deadline to sign up and to enter your January through August energy and vehicle data is September 29th at 11:59pm. Just visit the website at, click "Register" on the main menu near the top of the page, and fill out the form titled "Sign Up For The Challenge" to get Claremont another 100 points in the competition. Then enter your data to earn more, and invite your friends to join in too!

Claremont is one of ten cities in the CoolCalifornia City Challenge. It’s about what individuals can do to combat climate change, and $100,000 for community projects to be divided among the ten cities.

The Challenge: To get as many individuals (households) involved as possible. Earn points for prizes by reporting electricity and gas usage, vehicle miles traveled, and other things you are doing.

$50,000 was awarded for the number of new sign-ups by May 30th. You can help Claremont be a winner just by signing up -- but we think you'll also enjoy participating!

The Schedule

  • April 1 to May 30, 2014: Participants sign up and begin earning points.
  • May 30, 2014: Awards based on number of new sign-ups.
  • August 31, 2014: Last day to earn points for $50,000 more and other prizes.
  • October 2014: Awards ceremony.

Earth Day 2014

Earth Day 2014 was a great success! Much thanks to our sponsors: boutique teas, Friends of the Bernard Biological Field Station, Klaus & Sons, Loving Hut, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens, and UBER; with extra thanks to our platinum level supporters, IKEA and Pomona College.
